about

This is my medley of the original cowboy death songs.
*lyrics and melodies in public domain*.

lyrics

As I walked out on the streets of Laredo
As I walked out on Laredo one day
I spied a young cowboy all dressed in white linen
Slumped in the saddle and cold as the clay

“I can see by your outfit that you are a cowboy”
These words he did say as I boldly walked by
“Come and sit down beside me and hear my sad story,
I'm shot in the breast and I know I must die

And make this a letter to my gray-haired mother
And tell her the cowboy that she loved is gone
But please not one word of the man who had shot me
Don't mention his name, and his name will pass on

Get me six jolly cowboys to carry my coffin,
six dance-hall maidens to bear up my pall
Throw bunches of roses all over my coffin,
Roses to deaden the clods as they fall

Then fetch me a cup, a cup of cool water
To drench my parched lips," the cowboy did say
At once he had spoken, the sun began setting
The streets of Laredo grew cold as the clay

"And play the fife lowly, bang the drum slowly
Play the Dead March as they carry me along
First past the courthouse, and then down to Rose's
I'm a young cowboy, and I know I've done wrong

"Oh bury me not on the lone prairie
Where the coyotes howl, and the wind blows free,"
From the pallid lips of the youth who lay
On his dying bed at the close of day

"Oh bury me not on the lone prairie,"
These words came low and mournfully
From the pallid lips of the youth who lay
On his dying bed at the close of day

"Oh bury me not," but his voice failed there
And we took no heed to his dying prayer
In a shallow grave, just six by three
We buried him there on the lone prairie
